eLecture with online Systems like BigBlueButton and Google Hangouts

Timeframe: short

Benefit for teacher/learner (pedagogical approach)

  • More interaction between teacher/lerner
  • To learn in a self choosen environment (at home, …)
  • Unusual Setting with low barriers
  • Easy use of various media sources (webcam, videos, slides, survey, voting, …)
  • more interaction between learners
  • geographical distance doesnt matter

Goal/Expected Outcome (content):

learn, how to use a System like BigBlueButton or Google Hangout for learning and teaching in HE

How To:

  1. learners get a short introduction of the system which will be used, in this case it was mconf (bigbluebutton) and Google Hangouts
  2. learners should try the system first at the university while a traditional lesson and then also at home with their own equipment (notebook, pc, headset, internetconnection, …)
  3. learns should participate in a introduction eLecture which is moderated by the teacher. To get to know each other also online, to get a feeling for the online communication, to find out if all is working fine without the pressure of making a lesson, to “play” around with the system, ask questions, try various functions, …
  4. learners choose a topic and a timeslot for a eLecture they wonna make and fill in a online form (google-forms) with the relevant data
  5. all eLectures are marked in a shared calender and they are also visible in the students lesson plan via the official students administration system
  6. learners are making the eLecture with the help of the teacher as a moderator. the moderator tries to bring some “life” to the online learning space, keeps the discussions running, add comments, questions, …
  7. online-feedback-round after the eLecture there is a short feedback round where learners can give each other feedback about the eLecture

Technical Part:

  • mconf (BigBlueButtton)
  • Google Hangout
  • Google Calendar
  • Google Forms

Role of the teacher + role of the learner

The setting of this new way of learning opens a new horizon, because it´s very new for learners and teachers and it comes without negative experiences. The teacher is by definition a moderator and tries to keep the learning process running and to active the learners. As the internet has a much lower barrier, the learners feel more comfortable to participate in the eLecture, being not so much afraid to ask a “stupid” question as they even dont have to use their real names to join the virtual learning room. The moderator should be a “good example”, so he should be also active while the whole eLecture.

Short description of the scenario:

As a part of my lesson for first semester students they had to make a eLecture. In this eLecture they should present a self choosen topic to other stuents with BigBlueButton and Google Hangouts. They should get to know, how such a system is working, they should get a feeling how it is to present a topic online and how it is to participate as a student in such eLecture. The students were instructed that the eLecture should be at least 10 min long, must of them were about 30min, sometimes even more, depending on the topic, the presentation itself and the amount of questions after the presentation. Students gave a very positive feedback about this format and they liked very much the fact, that they can join from everywhere, they dont have to sit in a seminar room and there is no need to travel to the university.
